How do you get rid of mice and rats for good?
Mice get into apartments through gaps as small as a quarter inch around pipes, radiators and baseboards; rats come up from basements, yards, trash areas and sewers. Lasting rodent control is mostly exclusion: sealing gaps with steel wool or copper mesh and cement, fixing door sweeps, and storing trash in hard containers with tight lids. Traps and bait stations handle the animals already inside.
HPD inspectors wrote 29,214 violations for mice and rats in NYC rental buildings in the past 12 months: Bronx 11,032, Brooklyn 9,688, Manhattan 5,172, Queens 2,547, Staten Island 775.

What should you ask before you hire?
- Ask the exterminator to find and seal entry points, not only to set bait. Exclusion is what keeps rodents out after the visit.
- In apartment buildings, mice move between units, so treating one apartment rarely works. Ask the landlord to treat the line or the building.
- Use tamper-resistant bait stations where kids or pets live, and ask where every station is placed.
- For rats outside, the fix is usually trash storage, burrow treatment and yard cleanup. Report rats on the street or in a lot to 311.
Do exterminators need a license in New York City?
Pest control businesses in New York are registered with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and anyone applying pesticides for hire must be a DEC-certified applicator or technician. In NYC rentals, landlords must fix pest conditions, and they file a bed bug report with HPD every year.
How can you check the license yourself?
Ask for the company's DEC business registration number and the technician's certification ID. Our listings come from DEC's list of currently registered pesticide businesses.

Questions people ask
Who pays for rodent control in an NYC rental?
The landlord. NYC's Housing Maintenance Code requires owners to keep apartments free of mice and rats. Tell the landlord in writing, then call 311 if it isn't fixed so HPD can inspect.
How long does it take to get rid of mice?
Usually two to four weeks of trapping after entry points are sealed. If mice keep coming back, there's still a gap, often around pipes under sinks or behind the stove.
