Find a tattoo artist near you
A tattoo artist designs and applies permanent tattoos, and many also do cover-ups and touch-ups. People look for one for a first tattoo, a custom piece, or to fix or cover old work. A good artist works in a clean, licensed studio, uses single-use needles, and is honest about what will look good on your skin over time.

How do you choose a good tattoo artist?
- Pick the artist by their portfolio, not just the shop. Look for healed photos, not only fresh ones.
- Choose someone whose style matches what you want.
- Check that the studio has a current health permit or license where one is required.
- Watch them open new needles and use fresh gloves, ink caps and barrier film.
- Book a consultation for anything custom or large.
- Ask how they handle touch-ups after healing.
Many states, counties and cities require tattoo artists and studios to hold health department licenses or permits; ask to see them.
Questions to ask before you hire
- Can I see healed photos of work like this?
- Is the studio licensed or permitted by the health department?
- Do you use single-use needles and fresh ink for each client?
- How much is the deposit, and is it refundable?
- How many sessions will this take?
- What aftercare do you recommend?
- Do you offer a free touch-up?
Red flags to watch for
- Reusing needles or ink, or not opening sealed packs in front of you.
- Working out of a home or kitchen with no permit.
- No consent form or ID check.
- Tattooing someone who is drunk or high.
- Pressure to go bigger or add work you did not ask for.
What changes the price?
- Size and detail of the design
- Placement on the body
- Color versus black and gray
- Artist experience and demand
- Number of sessions
- Custom design time
Questions people ask
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
The surface usually heals in a few weeks. The deeper skin can take longer to settle. Follow your artist's aftercare and keep it out of the sun and pools while it heals.
Can a tattoo artist cover up an old tattoo?
Often, yes. The new design is usually larger and darker than the old one. Bring photos so the artist can tell you what is possible. Some people get a few laser sessions first to lighten it.
Should I tip a tattoo artist?
Tipping is common in many shops. Ask the shop what is usual if you are unsure.
